WORK/6 sets out to inspire literati and students alike with topics ranging from Mardi Gras and Minstrelsy to revolution and cleaning up the world. A community of writers dwells in its pages, a "virtual nation" of mentor generation authors, young stylists, and ascending contributors of all ages. Featured writer Ed Sanders sets the tone of WORK/6 with his essay "Writing, Social Change & Revolution." Other well-known writers, such as Andrei Codrescu, John Sinclair, M.L. Liebler, and Mariela Griffor are interspersed with discovery authors, all of them offering groundbreaking insights on the world around them. A must-read is Sinclair's colorful journal of New Orleans and his Indian practice with the Wild Magnolias, and from that moment on, "HANDA WANDA! YO MOM'MA!" will be your chant as well as mantra of WORK/6 connoisseurs all...
Following the Blues Scholar, there's more savvy themes here. You can drop in on Brita Brookes' tale of the 2008 Longest Walk (a Native American sacred journey), Mariela Griffor's experience in Santiago, Chile, and Bill Harris' saga on the birth of Minstrelsy in 1842. Then, for a moment, it seems as though all currents of the Mississippi and Detroit rivers are flowing together in DETROIT / NEW ORLEANS REUNION, a synergy of four Motor City writers and four from the Big Easy. Finally, not to be outdone, a collection of youth writers provides fresh energy and surprising maturity; WORK/6 is pleased to give them the wider exposure they deserve.

The Detroit Artists Workshop was founded in 1964. At that time, it was a child of the mimeograph revolution, publishing five literary volumes titled WORK. In subsequent years, many local cultural offshoots claimed the Workshop as their ancestor, including the Cass Corridor phenomenon of the 1980s, and the rock 'n roll explosion that began with the MC5 and Grande Ballroom. Since its reincarnation at the 2004 40th anniversary reunion, the DAW is once again dedicated to literary education and revitalization through its WORK/6 anthology.
